This program was recommended by Optimist International as a special event in the fall of 2005.
For several years, the club gave this Firefighter of the Year Award at the October Club meeting because October is Firefighters’ Month. However, because the award relates to Respect for Law in that it promotes awareness of the contribution public servants make to communities across the nation and around the world, the club’s Firefighter of the Year Award is now presented as part of the Respect for Law program in May.
The Timonium Optimist Hug A Hero Program
The Timonium Optimists recognize the outstanding service of a member of the local Baltimore County firefighting community. The honoree may be a paid- or volunteer-firefighter or paramedic. Members of the fire service appreciate the award because it is meaningful to be recognized by the broader community.

An honoree for 2017-18 was not able to be made. The program will resume for the 2018-19 club year.
