Optimists reach out into their own communities to involve young people in the game of golf. Each year 5,000 junior golfers, ages 10-18, participate in Optimist-sponsored events. The Optimist Junior Golf Program’s mission is to build positive values in young people through participation in Optimist district and international junior golf events.
The Timonium Optimist Club sponsors junior golfers in local Optimist tournaments. Boys and girls 14–18 years old who would like to have the support of the club should contact:
Ken Bollinger (410-357-5718)
The tournament is open to all boys and girls ages 14-18. Registration is limited to the first 96 entrants. The fee is $100 for registrations received before June 7th and $110 after June 7th. The top boy and girl will be eligible to attend the finals in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, expenses paid. If finances permit, the District may be able to help additional qualifiers.
650 top junior golfers from local Optimist qualifying tournaments as well as international players compete in the OIJGC each summer. As one of junior golf’s most prestigious events, the OIJGC (commonly called The Optimist) provides a unique opportunity for junior golfers from around the globe. Past Optimist junior golf participants include Tiger Woods, Michelle McGann, Phil Mickelson and Justin Leonard.
Since 2005, the Optimist International Tournament of Champions has been held each year as an invitational junior golf championship for previous participants of Optimist Junior Golf events and other top junior golfers. The Tournament of Champions is for male and female junior golfers ages 14-18.
The 4th Annual Tournament of Champions will be held on the Champion course at PGA National on a date in Fall 2008 to be announced.
