The annual Bull & Oyster Roast in January is a collaborative project of five Optimist clubs in the Baltimore metropolitan area. It is one of the Timonium Optimist’s major fundraisers for the support of our youth projects and programs. In conjunction with the roast, we hold a 50/50 Raffle that in the past has netted the winner more than $1,500.
For the past three years, the event has been held at Martin’s West, where it will be held again for 2009.
The January 19, 2008 event was our best roast yet! There were 1,060 people enjoying themselves at the extensive buffet, gaming activities and silent auction, as well as on the dance floor. The winner of the 50/50 drawing took home $1,563.
Besides selling tickets and enjoying the roast, our club contributed a lot of manpower to its success. Timonium volunteers helped with the Liquor and Meat Wheels, the Bingo Cards, 50/50 Raffle and the Money Room. Outstanding among our volunteers were Mark Harris, who functioned as treasurer for the entire roast, John Paull, who managed ticket sales, and Gary Shultz, who ran the Meat Wheel. John and Gary were our official club representative to the Bull & Oyster Roast Committee. The Timonium club’s portion of the profits this year (prorated by percentage of tickets sold) will be determined when the final roast report is filed. In 2007, our club netted $4,400.
