For many years from the inception of the Timonium Optimist Club in 1957, youth sports were a primary focus of club activities. As the inclusion of sports in school programs and through other community sources grew, the role of the Timonium Optimists has shifted. However, the club still believes in the importance of athletic competition and other recreational activities for youth. The Timonium Optimists continue to support Lutherville Timonium Recreational Council programs.
Every September and October, the club assists the LTRC youth football program by manning the down- and yard-markers for home games. Volunteers need no experience or knowledge of the game. We provide on-the-job training! This is a fun way to spend a Friday evening, or Saturday morning or afternoon in the fresh air supporting the youth of our community.
Each game requires of squad of three people for a total time period of about two hours. Volunteers sign up to work a single game. In the fall, a schedule is available of the games for which the Timonium Club has committed to provide chain-gang coverage.

The club sponsors a girls’ softball team each spring. One of our members, Don Imwold, has long been a coach for that LTRC program.
